PayPerPost (Revisited)

Posted on February 8th, 2008 in Lacking a Category | No Comments »

We apologize for this ahem…sponsored post. A long while back, we joined the PayPerPost community, and through some work, actually got some money from these sponsored posts. After this time, I have come to realize a few things. First…this is quite a good business model. It works. Second, this helps you pay hosting. Damn important I would say. However, there is one bone I want to pick with the entire program. I understand why you allowed advertisers to set bottom limits for blogs so they actually get a good deal. Sadly, for a blog like this, with a page rank of 3, and a rather low alexa score, most opportunities that I would actually enjoy posting are not offered to me. This binds me to posts about…casino deals, or…insurance deals, which I am sure readers are not thrilled at reading. Overall however, I have to admit, the money I have received from PayPerPost has gone rather well with my hosting bill. The goal now…is to find opportunities that I can actually *endorse* and would endorse even without being paid to do so. In this line, I hope to never post any trash whose only purpose is to sit there with the link to PayPerPost and provide me with 5 dollars to offset hosting. Cheers!

It might not be possible to launch a paper airplane from the ISS.
But a skyscraper. . . .

Scale Hydrogen Atom - 11-mile-wide-webpage

Posted on January 18th, 2008 in Science!, Photos/Videoes, Labs/Experiments, Picture of the Day, Site of the Day, Lacking a Category | No Comments »

I was doing my usual poking around online, when I came across this webapge : a single Hydrogen atom, done to scale, to show just how much empty space there is in the universe.

The big blue dot to the right of the text is a proton, or the center of an atom.  The electron is the little particle that circles around the proton.  (This is the basic structure of all atoms.  Some just have more electrons, and more stuff inside the proton.)  This proton is is 1,000 pixels across.  The electron, is 1/1000th the size of the proton - or one single pixel.  And it just happens to be, to scale, 50,000,000 pixels away.  50 MILLION pixels away.  Thats 11 MILES of webpage.  And this web page is 50 million pixels wide.  49,999,999 of those pixels are completely empty.

From the creator of the website : “I recommend trying to scroll from here to the right a screen at a time,
just to see how long it takes the little thumb in the scrollbar to move
visibly. True masochists can try to scroll through the whole eleven
miles - but the scenery along the way is pretty bleak.”

It’s pretty amazing how everything we consider “solid” has so much empty space in between. . . .

Supersonic Skydiver (131,000 feet)

I gotta hand it to this guy.  He’s set an impressive goal.  I sorta think he’s nuts, but then again, its something no one has ever done before, and lets face it, he’s gonna fall pretty darn fast.  And if you can do it. . . .why not?

Click the link for the rest of the story and the graphic.  Too many images was slowing down FLB page loading time. . .

He will leap head-first from a weather balloon 25 miles above Earth
and plummet at more than 1,000mph with only a parachute for company.

He will face external temperatures of minus 100c while inside
his carbon-fibre suit it will be a stifling 65c - almost 150
fahrenheit.

And most amazing of all, Michel Fournier is actually looking forward to it.

The daredevil Frenchman, a greyhaired 63-year-old former
paratrooper, aims to become the first person to break the sound barrier
in free-fall.”

. . .

After leaping from the balloon, Fournier believes he will break the 760mph sound barrier within 37 seconds.

The lack of friction due to the thinness of the air will mean he can
attain a much higher terminal velocity, and his team of scientists
estimate he will reach the top speed of 1,113mph before he is slowed
down by greater air resistance.

His parachute will not open until six minutes, 25 seconds
after jumping and he will finally reach the Earth after around eight
and a half minutes.”

What would you if someone tried to cash this?
Could you even figure out what it’s worth?

I don’t have any more information about the origins of this, but I’ve been told the math is correct by a source I usually trust.

Chore Wars

Posted on August 1st, 2007 in Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters, Lacking a Category | No Comments »

Now….you’ve all heard of World  of Warcraft yes?
Another MMORPG is Guild Wars…..
they are all based on war….yes?
Well….why not Chore Wars?
Get exp for doing housework, such as taking out the trash, etc. Even get loot from that pesky rat you killed while coming back from the epic quest of getting mail.

I’m kinda scared that they actually made this…..with actual graphics of an elf holding a broom, a wizard holding windex, and an orc holding a recycling bin….but, if you get a kick out of it….
you can even boast of being a lvl 10 elf window washer!
Check it out (if you dare) at Chorewars.com

Combined Post : Sweedish woman has fastest residential internet, and sci-fi novel via cell phone

Sweedish woman has fastest residential internet connection

“75-year-old Sibritt Löthberg from Karlstad Sweden just got her first computer, but it didn’t take her long to download all the necessary patches.

Swedish news site The Local reports that Löthberg’s home has been tricked-out with a record-breaking 40 Gb/s connection - the first time a private residence has tapped into the internet at such high speeds.

The blazing-fast connection comes courtesy her son, Peter Löthberg, a Swedish optical internet guru working at Cisco.

Ma Löthberg’s house was converted into a broadband dog-and-pony act in an effort to promote high-speed fibre connections as a commercially viable platform.

“I want to show that there are other methods than the old fashioned ways such as copper wires and radio, which lack the possibilities that fibre has,” said Peter Löthberg.

According to The Local, the secret sauce behind the connection is a new modulation technique that allows data to be transfered directly between two routers up to 2,000 km apart - with no intermediary transponders. This allows information to travel over huge distances without data loss.”

Guy writes 384 page sci-fi novel  on his  cell phone

“Talk about some serious work, and forget shooting video and photos from
your phone. This Italian guy wrote a 384-page science fiction novel on
his mobile phone while commuting back and forth to work over 17 weeks.
Robert Bernocco wrote it in short paragraphs on his Nokia 6630, using
T9 of course, and saved them on the phone. Then he downloaded the text
to his computer to proofread and edit. It’s just proof of what you can
do when you use your time wisely. His book is called Compagni di Viaggo (or Fellow Travelers *how appropriate* in English), and is now self-published on Lulu.com.”
