RIAA: Now lives in an even *further* universe than before

Posted on February 16th, 2008 in Computer software/hardware, Dumb Things That Happen, Tech News, Time Wasters | Comments Off on RIAA: Now lives in an even *further* universe than before

The RIAA announced at the State of the Net conference that its considering filters that reside on computers that detect copyright infringement. First question that pops up…why on earth would you install this? Their answer: bundle it with anti-virus software. The next logical question would be…how much would the RIAA pay anti-virus companies for all their lost business? I mean seriously, everyone would just use a free antivirus solution.
This concludes the report that the RIAA has just moved even further away from our universe. Right now…its like a speck. πŸ˜›
Thanks publicknowledge for this wonderful tidbit of insanity.

Short, Shark Tank interruption

Posted on February 7th, 2008 in Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters | 6 Comments »

Today, I give you a rather funny Shark Tank reading. I know…its like a week old, but I’m cycling through my firefox tabs. πŸ˜‰

This is titled…1% genius, 99% patience.
And, in the off chance this thing goes down, I have it copied here. *Note: This is quoted and copied word for word*

User calls help desk pilot fish with a pretty routine problem: “I
have an e-mail from corporate communications that says I need to click
on a link to update my security settings,” user says. “But every time I
do, nothing happens. I don’t know if my security settings are updated
or not.”

Fish: OK, are you looking at this e-mail right now?

User: “Yes.”

Fish: Can you see the link that you’re supposed to click on to update your security settings?

User: “Yes.”

Fish: Great, let’s go ahead and move your mouse pointer over the link and then left-click once.

User: “What?”

Fish: Just move the mouse over the link in the e-mail and left-click
once. It should launch a security update screen, or it may just
indicate that the security settings are being updated.

User: “Well, I’m left-clicking the mouse, but I’m not sure if anything is happening.”

Fish: Does a new screen appear over the e-mail after you click on it?

User: “No, nothing’s on the screen.”

Fish: You’re looking at the e-mail, right?

User: “Yes.”

Fish: How can there be nothing on the screen if you’re looking at the e-mail?

User: “There’s nothing on the screen.”

Fish: But you just said you’re looking at your e-mail. How can there be nothing on the screen?

User: “I don’t know, but there’s nothing on the screen.”

Fish: Is your e-mail software open?

User: “No.”

Fish: It’s not?

User: “Correct, it’s not open.”

Fish: OK. Can you please describe what you see on your screen?

User: “Well, there’s a ‘My computer’ icon, recycle bin, ‘My documents’ icon…”

Fish: This sounds like your computer’s desktop. Where is the e-mail with the link you said that you were looking at?

User: “I deleted it yesterday.”

Fish: You deleted it yesterday?

User: “Yes.”

Fish: How are you looking at it if you deleted it yesterday?

User: “I printed out a copy of the e-mail yesterday before deleting it.
I put the printed e-mail down on my desk so I could read it, put the
mouse over the link and left-clicked the mouse…”

Fish: Can you open your e-mails and go to your deleted items?

User: “Sure.”

Fish: Is the e-mail with the link to update your security settings there?

User: “Yes.”

Fish: Please open the e-mail.

User: “OK.”

Fish: Click on the link to update the security settings.

User: “OK. Hey, something is happening. Wow! You are a genius! Thank you so much!”

Thank you Computerworld for your wonderful shark tanks πŸ™‚

BANG! (random utility of the day)

Posted on February 6th, 2008 in Computer software/hardware, Downloads, Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters | 1 Comment »

Here….is one of those programs that really makes you think…why did someone write this?
BANG! forces your computer to crash….on demand. You run the .exe, and it shows a dialog box. This box…sad to say, contains a big red button that says “Crash Now!”. Theres also a small button that says “Never Mind” Now seriously, who in their right mind, with that dialog box infront of them click the little box and not click on the big red button? πŸ˜›
Sadly, this is made by osronline, and they require registration to get this totally useless app. If you really want it…check it out: OSRonline.com

Aim 6.8 Beta

Posted on January 23rd, 2008 in Computer software/hardware, Downloads, Dumb Things That Happen, Tech News, Time Wasters | 4 Comments »

Now…in line with the previous post about im histories…this…now this…is a truly disturbing thing.
Of course, I can see myself having fun with this plugin, but it could *seriously* pose some problems.

What Aim 6.8 beta includes is support for real-time IM. Its incompatible with other clients, but hey..if enough people decide its worth the risk, it could catch on.

To use this function, one user has to activate a direct connection, then it asks for the other person to accept so it isnt out of the blue and unexpected πŸ˜‰

Now…i’m sure you can see the fun aspects of this…and the problems. the oh so big problems. A hint for those of us who havent picked up. Freudian slips? awkward situations? πŸ˜‰

But…it could be fun to try out haha. Check it out: AIM 6.8

Presenting….

the trailer for a new movie.

Harry Potter and the Chronicles of the Lord of the Golden Compass of the Jedi.

http://io9.com/341233/when-adventure-becomes—-repetitive

A *masterpiece* of a film, it is truly a unique piece of work.
Now, seriously…its a trailer made of combined footage from the above mentioned movies as well as Eragon, Beowulf, and Bridge of Teerabitha.
As io9 put it, this shows when adventure becomes….repetitive. However, to their credit, all of these movies were very well done movies.
Many people like all of these stories even if there are striking similarities between them.
Its the way that each story was written and the elements that are put into them that make each one unique. To be completely honest however, Tolkien may have started off the entire fantasy chain. However, as one commenter put it, Tolkein was a genius, Lewis was his evangelistic buddy, and most fantasy writing has been based off of these two. I’m surprised that Robert Jordan didn’t make it in, but then again, no movies have been made on his Wheel of Time series.
Overall, I guess what this trailer shows is that there seems to be a general idea that just attracts people to these books, but that doesn’t mean that each story is simply a copy of another. On a different note…the maker of this movie…really did have nerve to potentially annoy those movie companies πŸ˜›

Translucent Concrete

Posted on January 14th, 2008 in Photos/Videoes, Science!, Tech News, Time Wasters | 2 Comments »

Random info for the day. People have translucent concrete. Its not CLEAR….but still pretty cool. When they make the concrete, optic fiber is somehow set into the concrete so that light can pass from one side. The other side though, is fully opaque. One can imagine a concrete dome that is sunlit, and yet solid from the outside. The company claims that the optical fibers are only 4%, and allows concrete to keep its stability. As io9 puts it…that supposedly means that “Pretty light shine through, house not fall down”
I can’t really see anything *groundshaking* pop up from this development, but it would make for an interesting experience to be able to roughly see outside through concrete πŸ™‚

iphone app

Even though I don’t personally have an iPhone, I have played with one and I have to admit, it is pretty fun. One thing I like are the various applications people have made for it. One that was really interesting, is Listen. When you have a song you are hearing, turn on your iPhone, put it near the music source and run the app. It will sample the music for a few seconds and then try to tell you the song, artist, and album. Its REALLY in beta, but its a wonderful idea.

Game of the…err…time period!

Posted on January 9th, 2008 in Games, Time Wasters | Comments Off on Game of the…err…time period!

Cursor*10 is a VERY odd game. You play a cursor that has to get to the top floor of a building. Moving your cursor in game..moves the game cursor. Each cursor has a life time. When that lifetime runs out, you have to start over again, with one difference. The cursor that died…moves along with you. By the time you have reached say, the 4th level and have died 3 times, you have 3 other mice doing what you did those times. The only way to reach the top floor, is by having those ghost mice holding down buttons, breaking open boxes, etc, while your actual mouse moves along. Its a very innovative game thats quite addicting to win.
