Little Note About Posting

Posted on May 25th, 2007 in The Never Ending Story/Other FLB Events | No Comments »

Yes, I know we’ve been a little lax on posting lateley, but we’re all human like the rest of the world, not machines, and we also need a vacation every now and then.  I’d say, collectively, in the past two days, we’ve gotten about 4 hours of sleep :(….

So, don’t look for that much new over the weekend.  We’re all on vacation, away, not here, somewhere else, etc.  We’ll be back Tuesday.

This doesn’t guarentee that we won’t post anything new, it could still happen. :)

Random Post of the Day

/start depressing post

Right, so, due to some random/wierd events that happened, I feel a review of some laws necessary.
First: Murphy’s Law:

Anything that can go wrong, will.

This is quite simple to see in real life…happens all the time.

Second: Finagle’s Law:

Anything that can go wrong, will—at the worst possible moment.

This is also quite easy to see in real life, you can probably think of a few examples right off the bat.

Third: The Blin Law:

Anything that can go wrong, will—at the worst possible moment….WHOOOOOPEEE.

Fourth: The Combined Joe/Blin Law:

Anything that can go wrong, will—at the worst possible moment….WHOOOOOPEEE……Yes, Your Life Does Suck.

Your FLB homework: Think of these laws, and see how horrifyingly true it is in your life, get depressed, and realize that, hey…your alive, you’ll die, screw it all!

Disclaimer: Remember, this is simple conjecture, it should not be taken seriously at all, its sardonic and dripping with wry humor. Yay. /End depressing post

Great Package Race 2007 : DHL Wins

Posted on May 2nd, 2007 in Labs/Experiments, The Never Ending Story/Other FLB Events, Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters, Site of the Day, Lacking a Category | No Comments »

I guess this is kinda one of those kinda strange, and pointless, but cool links I’ve found online.

“ast month A group of 60 GT logistics students, led by logistics expert
John Bartholdi, a professor in the Stewart School, sent identical boxes
bound for places like Lomé, Togo and Split, Croatia. With no indication
that there’s a competition underway, each carrier picks up its parcel,
and the race begins. The progress of the packages was tracked online
and students followed the often Byzantine journey (across oceans,
rivers and jungles and sometimes by bicycle) from Atlanta, Georgia, to
a location that may not even have an official street address.”

The packages are tracked throughout their journey.  In different years, different carriers have “won,” sometimes delivering all the packages, sometimes only one or two.  The destinations from Atlanta, GA this year :

Apia, the only city on Upulu, one of the islands comprising the
country of Samoa, in the western Pacific Ocean. Upulu has no street
addresses.

* Florianopolis, an island off the coast of southern Brazil just
above Uruguay; considered by the carriers to be a “remote area.”

* Harare, capital of Zimbabwe, which is currently experiencing hyperinflation and political unrest.

* Tikrit, birthplace of Saddam Hussein and a center of Sunni insurgency in Iraq.

* Yangon, until recently, capital of Myanmar, one of the most
isolated countries in the world. The city was formerly known as
Rangoon, Burma.

13 Things that make us happy

Posted on April 23rd, 2007 in The Never Ending Story/Other FLB Events, Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters, Site of the Day | No Comments »

Yes, someone made a list….of things that make geeks happy. And funnily….all of these make me happy.

1) My gmail notifier lights up. It could be a friend asking if I want
to meet up for a drink later or a nigerian prince who has a financial
proposition I simply can’t refuse. Either way those few moments before
I actually read the message always fill me with a bit of euphoria.

2) API’s - I know that it is fun to screen scape websites and collect
information that you can manipulate yourself, but it is a lot better
when they give you the information legally and you can write more
productive code. Ex: Flickr, Facebook, USPS, etc. (get the hint ESPN)

3) Someone submits something I wrote to digg. Sometimes it makes the
digg homepage, sometimes it doesn’t. Either way it’s flattering to have
something I wrote submitted by someone else who thought it was
digg-worthy.

4) A new referrer pops up in bSuite. Whatever analytics you use on your
website, it’s always nice to see someone spreading the link love.

5) Seeing something in the real world that correlates to something in
the geek world. Ever have a total ring up as 404 or 13.37 and enjoy a
bit of silent amusement? Yeah, me too.

6) When the shipping status changes to “on truck for delivery.” I buy a
lot of stuff online, this is the final step before my package arrives
and it pretty much makes me feel like I’m windsurfing on a sea of
spectacular. Is work frustrating today? Did my upstairs neighbor keep
me up all night by making noises that sounded like they were giving
birth to an elephant? No worries, I’ve got some awesome shit coming in
the mail - all is forgiven.

7) Someone posts a real comment on one of my blog entries. Hell yeah, I
blogged and someone responded without trying to sell me ringtones.
Fan-freakin-tastic.

8) That little green icon in the lower left of my browser indicating
that my page validates. W3C all up in this biznatch - oh how I love
that green icon. I wish you were a nightlight beside my bed.

9) My code works perfectly on the first try. It’s rare, but it happens.
Usually I’ll triple-check to make sure it’s actually working.

10) Seeing binary code written on a shirt and knowing what it says,
laughing to yourself and then laughing out loud because only another
geek would understand.

11) Hearing a co-worker say “for the win” or “for the loss” in basic conversations. That’s it…no other reasons

12) Having an idea about a project that you want to work on and then
someone else launches the exact idea but right around the same time
that you thought of it. For most people, that would be upsetting, but
it just means that you get all of the functionality and can work on
another project. It makes me happy.

13) Technorati and Alexa Ranking that increases each week. I like to
see my numbers jump greatly over time which supports my theory that
people actually read my blog.

Yup….all of those make me happy…specially the change from processing to shipping to out for delivery. Thats just awesome to get in email :P
How bout you? Thank you ArmenianEagle

We’re Green!

Flashladybug is hosted by Dreamhost. Dreamhost has become green. Ergo, Flashladybug is green!
Or, as Dreamhost puts it:

We’re so green! Carbon neutral, to be exact!

And YOU host with us! So YOU’RE green too! Q.E.D.

Yay for green!  Read about how Dreamhost has gone green, and is now the largest webhoster to be carbon-neutral: Dreamhost!

Just a headsup

For people who use computers alot….and their computers that don’t have batteries…or external drives…either make sure you have a nice trusty ups, or some pretty reliable power service :P
Here i was…burning a 4 gig dvd. Half way through, whirrrr, zeeeeeee, silence. “AH CRAP!” I was burning from my network pc. Well….theres a coaster. Waits patiently for the power to return. YAY! Pops in a new dvd and starts burning. 3 gigs in, whirrrrrr, silence. “OMG. WHY?”
….
Twice. Two coasters, and corrupt data on my network now. Its just great…lol. then again, we’re talking about my laptop which has a battery life of an hour when its on low everything. So…do what i just did if you dont want this happening to ya: EBAY>>Search>>UPS>>Buy.>>Pay…>>>Happy!
lol…this is a normal public service message brought to you by Brian’s crazy paranoid house that has too many packages arriving at his door every day. :)

So you may notice the theme just changed from a rather boring/minimalistic default theme back to our old one. Reason? I’ve been trying to customize that one to suit our needs, and I realized, we’re going to be changing themes soon enough, why bother? Please pardon my procrastination/laziness, I’m extremely sleep deprived–i walked into a pole today :P while thinking of sleep and calc. So we’re back at this theme. Sorry!

We apologize for the extreme downtime that flashladybug has experienced. Apparently, after Dreamhost had their outage, they also did a sql database update, and Wordpress had to be updated. With this update…a few breaks occurred with our theme and plugins. Over the next few days, we will be rebuilding Flashladybug with a new theme, so expect there to be many different themes flashing through. Thanks!
