Google Maps offers a New Feature – change your own driving route

Posted on July 2nd, 2007 in Computer software/hardware, Google, Lacking a Category, Site of the Day, Tech News | No Comments »

It may not seem like a big deal, but changing the routing of your driving directions can be a very good thing.  Googles computers don’t know everything about every road.  They may not know that 20 miles of I82 are being ripped up an re-paved, and that you want to avoid I82 at all costs.  So when Google Maps has you zipping along I82, what do you do?  Simply click and drag your route away from I82, and Google will update your turn-by-turn directions to direct you around the troublesome I82.

Here’s the link to the Google page about the new feature

US Broadband “anemic” at best

Posted on June 27th, 2007 in Site of the Day, Software/Hardware Reviews, Tech News | No Comments »

“If you need any more evidence that U.S. broadband is anemic at best,
here’s another one: The Communications Workers of America (CWA) has
just released a report ranking us 16th in broadband speeds and
connectivity among industrialized nations.

According to a Computerworld report,
“the median real-time download speed in the U.S. is 1.9Mbit/sec.,
compared with 61Mbit/sec. in Japan, 45Mbit/sec. in South Korea,
17Mbit/sec. in France and 7Mbit/sec. in Canada.” “

Not very good, is it?. . .
We also pay more on average for our broadband too.

The Universe

Posted on June 12th, 2007 in Site of the Day, Time Wasters | No Comments »

The Universe is an interesting web application by Jonathan Harris, creator of I feel Fine. He uses the graphical metaphor of a starry sky to show the connections between random bits of information like news stories, pictures and quotes. Like with previous work, he takes a philosophical approach, saying that each person’s interests forms their own personal mythology (long explanation). The concept and interface are strange, but fun to play with nonetheless.
Both this and other things by Harris are made with Processing, an open source programming language that resembles java.

Netscape Navigator 9 Beta has been released

Posted on June 7th, 2007 in Computer software/hardware, Site of the Day, Software/Hardware Reviews, Tech News | 1 Comment »

Netscape?  They’re still around?  Kinda surprised me too, and I don’t think I’ve used a Netscape browser for almost 6 years now.  And by used, I mean been anywhere near a comp that even has Netscape installed on it.

Navigator 9 actually looks like it might have some good features though. . .

URL CorrectionNavigator 9
will automatically correct common typos in URLs. For example, if you
accidentally type googlecom, Navigator will fix it be to google.com”

Sidebar mini browser

You’ve always been able to have
bookmarks open in the sidebar, but we’ve improved this functionality
and extended it to all links, not just bookmarks.”

Extension Compatibility

Navigator 9 shares its architecture with the latest Mozilla technologies; as such Navigator 9 will allow you to install extensions that are compatible with Firefox 2.”

Personally, I think the last one is the really interesting one.  I like FF because of its extensions, tabbed browsing, and better security (in that order.)  I’m using an extension to write this blog entry.  What I don’t like is the fact that its a memory hog.  It EATS ram.  Hopefully they’ll fix this in 3 or 4, but until then. . .even though its netscape. . .its a possibility. . .

Man Claims New Sleepless Record : 11 Days

Posted on May 30th, 2007 in Dumb Things That Happen, Labs/Experiments, Lacking a Category, Science!, Site of the Day, The Never Ending Story/Other FLB Events, Time Wasters | No Comments »

A Cornish man says he has broken the world record for sleep deprivation by staying awake for 11 days and nights.”

Hardest part

Weary Mr Wright told BBC News: “I feel pretty good, It’s been a bit of a slog, but I got there.”

He said that his ‘Stone Age’ diet of raw food helped parts of his brain to stay awake and remain functional for long periods.

He said: “It makes it much easier to switch from one side of the brain which is really tired, to the other.”

During the record attempt, Mr Wright noticed his speech becoming incomprehensible at times and colours appearing very bright.

A webcam and CCTV cameras monitored him 24-hours a day.

The attempt was part of Mr Wright’s research into the body’s relationship to sleep.

He argues that parts of the human brain require a
different amount of sleep and it is possible to stay awake and remain
functional for long periods.”

NEWS: Starcraft II….UNVEILED!

Posted on May 19th, 2007 in Computer software/hardware, Photos/Videoes, Picture of the Day, Site of the Day, Tech News, Time Wasters | No Comments »

Woot!
I guess the Korean’s didn’t end up killing the whole Blizzard convention over this decision. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone declared it a holiday or something. Starcraft II is going to have new units to Protoss Terran and Zerg races, a 3d engine with realistic physics, BIG units, and a much larger army size. Its going to have a single player campaign that CONTINUES the story….meaning…its not over? :D
And, it has an improved map editor.

Zerg: zerglings can mutate into little bombs :P
Terran: Reapers are here, with dual machine pistols and have jumpjets, bypassing walls as a base defence

Protoss: Zealots have a charge ability to move quickly to chase down someone
Immortal: Creates impenetrable shields under heavy arms fire, such as seige tanks, but small arms fire can kill em quickly
Colossus: Big..monstrosities :P that have dual lasers hehe
Stalker: teleportation unit
Pheonix: flying unit like valkries except extremely powerful shots. its vulnerable after fire
Warprey: air unit that fires a laser that gets stronger when fired longer
Mothership: Major…BIG ship. You can only have one of these. They have Time Bomb which creates a shield against incoming missles. Planet Cracker destroys whatever is under the ship, and the ship can move while its doing this…a flying ship of DESTRUCTION.
Finally, it has Black Hole, which triggers….a black hole, sucking everything near it, say…4 terran battlecruisers into the abyss.
I am lookin forward to this hehehhe

Its in pre alpha…so, expect this in the future :P The exact words of release date: “When its DONE”
Which, I take to be very good…no need to rush out a half done Starcraft…make it juuuuust right :)
Heres a few images hehe

Some videos also exist, here
Thank you IGN for details and Blizzard for doin it!

Who NEEDS Photoshop?

Posted on May 12th, 2007 in Computer software/hardware, Downloads, Photos/Videoes, Site of the Day, Tech News | No Comments »

Other than us, people who make their living off of it, and Adobe? Especially when you can use PhotoWipe to erase things from the image and leave it looking perfectly spotless? Ever taken a picture and realized, ooops, theres a bar in the way? Or, theres someone in the way of the picture? PhotoWipe by Hanov Solutions uses a processing library to erase your selection and extrapolate what should belong there. It might not be perfect…but, this looks much better…

I would like to see how it extrapolates, exactly…but hey, it works :P Check it out: PhotoWipe
