Firefox has surpassed its 200 millionth download!
The following is from SpreadFireFox.Com
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/24503

I’ve included a short summary of the blog entry…….

Posted by

on Mon, 07/31/2006 - 20:18Spreading Firefox

“Today the Firefox download counter crossed the 200 million mark……

We know that this number doesn’t represent actual users because this
number includes both Firefox 1.0 and Firefox 1.5 (soon Firefox 2,)
because not every one completes every download, and because not every
download results in a new Firefox user………….

That being said, 200 million people seeking Firefox is a huge
accomplishment and we’re right to celebrate our role in driving that
number………”

But today we celebrate. Congratulations to every single person who made Firefox the success it is today.

we did it

And, I shouldn’t have to tell you this,

GET FIREFOX.

Bilboards spam via Bluetooth?

Posted on August 7th, 2006 in PSA-Types, Dumb Things That Happen, Computer software/hardware, Tech News | No Comments »

Okay, I suppose this would happen eventually.  Interactive bilboards search for people with bluetoth technology, and then try and send them links to ads, via text message, internet link, or video.

Some People….

I would like to bring to attention the story of one pilot fish at computerworld….
Shark Tank has these funny/intersting stories on tech personnel and their experiences.
Now, generally….these stories are funny….or one can nod and connect with it…..this story however, just makes me want to pull out my hair in frustration even though its not even ME whos talking to her! its almost painful to read…..

I tried to write a post to summarize the totally and absolute idiocy and gut wrenching story…but i failed every time. Just read it for yourself….here

And Now….whats happening in my basement

Posted on August 2nd, 2006 in Science!, PSA-Types, The Never Ending Story/Other FLB Events, Hands On/Build This!, Time Wasters, Dumb Things That Happen, Computer software/hardware | 2 Comments »

After a fwe weeks of reading up on high energy physics, the current list of projects that are happening in my basement is as follows:

1) Creating several peltier heat pumps to make a super cooler
2) From 1, create dry ice. :D
3) nitrogen laser
4) High efficiency vaccum pump
5) tesla coil
6) multiple high voltage power supplies
7) thermite

What i need right now:

ideas on how to make the peltier heat pumps efficient enough to get to about -80 C. and what exactly to do with thermite….i mean, its fun and all, but i really don’t like the idea of vaporizing holes in my basement or drive way….
any ideas on some other projects?
right now, thermites almost done.

*Edit: Nihar suggests a “EMERGENCY BUTTON” on my laptop. Find some space in it, add thermite. arm thermite with big red button. place vinyl box on hinges over said big red button. Wait patiently for real emergency. Flip said vinyl box, press big red button. ruuun away and warn those under the laptop. (Note: by that i mean, for example, if you were on the top floor of a 10 story building, please warn ALL those under you…)

For the cooler, Nihar has yet another idea…..well, someone has an idea, and nihars telling me… :P
Use a stupid cooling laser. DUH *Thunk.
Now…how to build one…….
And im off on a quest to find materials for a cooling laser.

:D

ATTN: This post was placed under PSA-Types for the potential hazardous conditions created by these projects. Please…these ideas were mean’t for totally insane people like me, who, for some odd reason, has marginal experience in things blowing up, vaporizing holes in pavement, and dealing with the FBI. (jk)
I’ll post more on the status of these later….

Trojan Cloaking itself as FF Extension

Posted on July 28th, 2006 in PSA-Types | No Comments »

There is a trojan out there cloaking itself as Firefox extension NumberedLinks 0.9.  The trojan downloads other malacious programs to your computer, which could possibly send out important and private data from your computer.

NumberedLinks usually allows you to navigate using numbers on the keyboard instead of a mouse.

No information was provided on how to tell if your extensions is the real extension, or the trojan.  I would assume that the trojan shows up unexpectedly, while the real extension shows up because you downloaded it.  Worse comes to worse, re-install the extension from the FF site.

PSA : New Bug Sent through Powerpoint

Posted on July 23rd, 2006 in PSA-Types, How To's | 1 Comment »

Okay, this is a PSA, but come on, who opens a powerpoint file that someone randomly sends them?
Send an email.  Gimme a link to a cheap website.  Email me a powerpoint?  How about cutting a crop circle in my front lawn instead?  I’ll at least have a chance of looking at that.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/5195838.stm

Moral of the blog : Don’t open powerpoints from people you don’t know.  For that matter, don’t even open email from people you don’t know.

While i’m on the subject, one other helpful trick for email : How many of you have a spam filter running, but still recieve many, many wanted emails that get dumped into the void called your inbox?  Some spam filters can be set to filter good email, by senders adress, or name, into separate folders, so that when you login to your email, its easily appartent that Joe sent me 3 messages, Brain sent me 2, and I have 4 from other people I know not important enough to warrant a folder, but that I should still read.

Lawsuit : Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy tool is spyware

Posted on June 30th, 2006 in Software/Hardware Reviews, PSA-Types, Computer software/hardware, Tech News, Downloads, Site of the Day | No Comments »

The lawsuit, by a Seatlle resident, claims that the Genuine Advantage tool was dowloaded through the automatic update tool without clear indication of what the user was downloading, and exactly what the software would do.  The Windows Updater is usually used to do just that - update the software, including fixes for bugs, and the occasional security hole.

Personally, I recieved the Windows Update, with two updates : The security update, and then, as a separate item, the Genuine Advantage one. ( I chose not to download it, although this computer came from Dell with WIndows all ready installed.)  I suppose that I knew what the Genuine Advantage did, but then again, I’m a fairly compodent writer on a tech blog.  I can think of many people who wouldn’t know what it does.  I have to ask, is the updater really the way to distribute the Genuine Advantage?  It sure sounds like misuse of the updater to me.

PSA : Don’t use Ctrl + C while browsing on the Internet!

Posted on June 20th, 2006 in PSA-Types, Dumb Things That Happen, Computer software/hardware, Tech News | No Comments »

If you use Ctrl + C in Internet Explorer, under normal circumstances, it’s possible to write a normal AI script to collect whatever text the user coppied. For example, if I coppied “www.Flashladybug.com”, the website could record that.

Now, this isn’t usually a problem, it’s pointless for a website to view the text that you coppied from them. However, it is a problem, for example, if you coppied something like a credit card number or something like that. So : Don’t coppy and paste anything like credit card numbers, and turn off this annoying option by following the directions listed in the link (which involve a menu and checking a little box with the mouse.)

Or just use Firefox, where it isn’t a problem in the first place.
