“The population of the United States will pass 300 million today, or
tomorrow. No one knows exactly where, no one know precisely when.”

It was in 1915 that the US population reached 100 million. Fifty-two years
later, in 1967, it reached 200 million. It has taken just 39 more years for
the milestone of 300 million to be achieved.”

Tabbed browsing, RsS feeds, built in antiphishing. This will be interesting. I find it funny that this is all happening tomorrow. (or..shall i say, today. *clock reaches 12:00) Read it here. And lets see how much better IE7 is. Though, you can bet im still using FF. :P

US Kids Lead Stressful Lives (NO DUH)

Posted on October 9th, 2006 in Dumb Things That Happen, PSA-Types, Science!, Time Wasters | No Comments »

You know, the fact that it took the American Academy of Pediatrics to say that kids are stressed out is just plain moronic. I believe any person who has ever been NEAR a child knows this fact. It was interesting that I found this article while also in the midst of freaking out about my psets and labs. Slightly different from the “enrichment” activities this articles talks about, but still, KIDS=STRESS. STRESS=BAD.
Pointing out the obvious. Read it here

If you can’t trust a hacker, who can you trust? Last weekend, one of the speakers at the Toorcon security conference said he and a partner had found an unfixable Firefox flaw … they even had video of it being exploited. Well, they came clean today, and admitted it was all a hoax.

“The
main purpose of our talk was to be humorous,” admitted Mischa
Spiegelmock, in a statement made through Mozilla.org this afternoon. In
an attempt to distance himself from his colleague, Andrew Wbeelsoi,
Spiegelmock added today, “I do not have 30 undisclosed Firefox
vulnerabilities, nor did I ever make this claim. I have no undisclosed
Firefox vulnerabilities. The person who was speaking with me made this
claim, and I honestly have no idea if he has them or not.” Source: BetaNews

Several reports say so, and I have confirmed atleast an extremely dead google site at our school network which uses comcast. Thank god i have verizon fios. lol. Read it here, and we’ll post updates

Air Car $15,000

Posted on September 24th, 2006 in Historic Technology, PSA-Types, Science!, Tech News | No Comments »

Now, lets see:
Car runs on plain air. Check
Car works. Check
Car exists. Check
Car to be sold next year. Check
Car can drive from CA to NY on one tank. Check
Car has awesome milage. Check
Car costs ~15,000 bucks. CHECK!

Go Go Go!

Although, I really think their idea of using aluminum as the chassis, is just slightly stupid, as aluminium is flammable. Provided, there is less gasoline in the engine now, but still, its “bloodly flammable.”
The plan uses compressed air as the force to drive the pistons up and down. For higher mileage and speed, it will use a bit of gasoline or biofuel to help the air. Takes a few min to compress all the tanks, which are made of carbon fiber ( :D )
It has an onboard compressor :D that will do its work in 4 hours when plugged in at home. This sounds more and more like the next revolution in transportation.
Now, lets get this thing into the market shall we?

Rant #2

Posted on September 20th, 2006 in Dumb Things That Happen, PSA-Types, Science!, The Never Ending Story/Other FLB Events | 3 Comments »

ok, sorry bout the lack of posts, but we are testing 3 kits from Edmunds Scientific, so prepare for a large review. However, this testing does not stop me from ranting about certain things that, well, make me rant. Remember that long post I had on black holes, crazy people with their signs against neutrinos? (How could you forget that?)

Now, reinforcing that. The Large Hadron Collider is under construction. It is a particle accelerator that is 17 miles long, located at CERN. It makes things go zooom around its circle and finally make them run into something. (thats total oversimplification…but…)
rant/
The Lifeboat Foundation, which is nonprofit, is “devoted to safeguarding humanity from what it ocnsiders threats to our existence.” Ya know, thats great, really. Its a noble cause. one problem though. how?
It declares that artificial black holes could “threaten all life on Earth.” You know…i would never have thought of that. Oh, sorry, its not all black holes, its only artificial ones? Really?!
So that means, those black holes that are around our galaxy dont really count. Their solution to scientists creating black holes on Earth is to make more Earths. profound…visionary…now, lets see where these colonies are eh?
First of all, they dont want the Earth to be swallowed up. Good. I don’t either. Their official mission is to protect humanity from threats or dangers. Lets see now, what are you going to do about the SUN? Its going to go blow up later. We arent worrying about that…how bout the rogue asteroid? How bout some random insane person blowing up the world using existing technology? (that actually works?) Lets compare the threat from that, and to these “mini black holes” which vaporize within such a small fraction of a second, that I would have to write it in scientific notation. In other words, it is not going to be able to do anything. In the off hand that it actually does exist longer than that, here is the catch: such small black holes have so little mass that their apparent volume is so minuscule, that it sucks matter at a remarkably small rate.
According to a few physicists, such a black hole would be able to consume one proton in 100 hours. Thats only the first one. It slows down as it takes more mass. For such a black hole to destroy , say a gram of mass, it would take longer than the age of the universe. So, please…if you still believe that these mini black holes are going to end the world, I have a question, are you made up of, just…one proton? Because if you are, then you have reason to worry. (YOU ARENT)

And also, generally, a nonprofit organization is a good thing, their trying to help the world, but seriously, when you try to help, know what you are doing. Please.
