Google, you disappoint me :’(

Posted on July 19th, 2007 in Google, Dumb Things That Happen, Tech News | No Comments »

You know, google is probably one of the few companies, if not the only one, for whom 58% increase in revenue is a disappointment. Now, the increase was from 2.46 billion to 3.87 billion. Tell me, is a almost 1.5 billion dollar increase quite substantial enough? but no…google, you are sliding. You didnt make it a FOUR billion dollar increase >.<. How could you?!
Ya, ok, i’m going to stop that now, so yes, apparently this has “unnerved investors who were expecting another blowout quarter.” Compare this, with Yahoo’s. hey cool! only a 2% drop! woot!
:P

Escape reality with the Avatar Suit!!! (Video)

Posted on July 17th, 2007 in Labs/Experiments, Photos/Videoes, Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters, Software/Hardware Reviews, Site of the Day | No Comments »

Why live in first-person real-life when you can wear the Avatar Suit, and experience life from a second-person point of view?

“Do you play so many videogames that you feel weird walking around
without being able to see yourself from a third-person perspective? If
so, you need to uninstall World of Warcraft and reacquaint yourself
with the sun and your peers. If that seems like too difficult a
prospect to handle, you can always just get an Avatar Machine. This
contraption for the antisocial and maladjusted allows you to stroll
around the real world seeing yourself from a perspective you’re more
used to, all while freaking out everyone around you.”

Bill Gates Isn’t the Worlds Richest Man

Posted on July 3rd, 2007 in Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters, Tech News | No Comments »

“Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim is the world’s richest man, worth an estimated $67.8 billion, after overtaking Microsoft founder Bill Gates, according to a respected tracker of Mexican financial wealth on Monday.

A 27% surge in the share price of America Movil, Latin America’s largest cell phone operator controlled by Slim, from March to June made him close to $8.6 billion wealthier than Gates, said Eduardo Garcia in Sentido Comun, the online financial publication he founded.

Garcia estimated that Gates was worth $59.2 billion.”

Where on Earth is Middle Earth?

Posted on June 24th, 2007 in Labs/Experiments, Dumb Things That Happen, Picture of the Day, Time Wasters | No Comments »

I found this one to be kinda interesting. . .

Even though Tolkien says that the geography at the time of the LOTR trilogy is different then the current geography of the world, some comparisons can be made. . .Take a look at a few of these from

http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2007/06/03/121
-where-on-earth-was-middle-earth/

• The Shire is in the South-West of England, which
further north is also home to the Old Forest (Yorkshire?), the Barrow
Downs (north of England), the city of Bree (at or near
Newcastle-upon-Tyne) and Amon Sul (Scottish Highlands).
• The Grey Havens are situated in Ireland.
Helm’s Deep is near the Franco-German-Swiss border tripoint, close to the city of Basel.
• The mountain chain of Ered Nimrais is the Alps.
• Gondor corresponds with the northern Italian plains, extended towards the unsubmerged Adriatic Sea.
•The Sea of Rhûn corresponds to the Black Sea.

And a few more that you have to actually read the blog to find out about.

People Leaving Email Behind

Posted on June 18th, 2007 in Dumb Things That Happen, Software/Hardware Reviews | No Comments »

Not surprisingly, some people are beginning to leave their email behind.  They’ve had it with hundreds or even thousands of messages in their inbox that they know they’ll never have time to reply to.  They know that messages that enter that giant dumping ground might not get read, weather or not the messages are spam, or actual communication.  It’s just not worth it to put all this time and effort into reading what may be total crap.  If it’s that important, call or write a letter.

I’m not about to give up my email anytime soon, but I can understand the flood of random crap that you’ll never actually read.  I get a few messages that I don’t read.  I just click the little box that says I read em, and pass em on to the next folder past my inbox.

Clean your keyboard in the dishwasher? (!! Read Post First !!)

Posted on June 14th, 2007 in Labs/Experiments, Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters, How To's | No Comments »

.

Okay, another one of those kinda stupid, kinda creative, possibly brilliant posts.
Do you have a dirty keyboard?  Are the letters starting to disappear behind a layer of dirt and grime?  Maybe it’s time to run your keyboard through the dishwasher.

It might or might not work.  Doing it more then once probably isn’t a good idea.  As long as it dries fully, it should be okay though.  Its usually repeated exposure to water that causes problems.  As a bit of common sense, don’t try this with a keyboard you’re not prepared to loose/replace.

Read more about the idea, the results, and waterproof keyboards here

How much does the internet weigh?

Posted on June 7th, 2007 in Science!, Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters, Tech News, Lacking a Category | 1 Comment »

Depending on who you ask, the internet weights “About two ounces (60 grams), or perhaps 0.2 millionths of an ounce (6
micrograms), depending which method you use to calculate the weight of
the active electrons necessary to sustain the global network.”

Not a whole lot, is it?
Well, it’s not really the weight of the entire internet.  It’s not the weight of all the wires, cables, computers, and servers.  Just the electricity that makes em all go.
Still pretty amazing….

CompUSA sells man empty box on clerance, won’t take return or give refund

I know that these days, buyer beware.  Even if it says all sales final, if you’re about to spend even $250 on a camera, look in the box to make sure its actually there.

I don’t know where I stand on this.  On one hand, the guy should have looked in the box before he bought the “camera.”  On the other hand, it’s really rude not to offer the guy a refund.  When you go into a store, you expect the product to be in the box, especially if the store is expecting to get your $250.

A look @ global gas prices

Posted on June 5th, 2007 in Labs/Experiments, Dumb Things That Happen, Time Wasters | No Comments »

Surprisingly, we’re not that bad off, even if we have to pay $3-$4 a gallon for gas. . .World gas prices vary quite a bit, from really cheap to really expensive.

A few samples from a loooong list :

Netherlands, Amsterdam……………………… $6.48
Norway, Oslo………………………………………… $6.27
Italy, Milan…………………………………………… $5.96

Brazil, Brasilia……………………………………… $3.12
Cuba, Havana……………………………………… $3.03
Taiwan, Taipei…………………………………….. $2.84
Lebanon, Beirut…………………………………… $2.63

uwait, Kuwait City…………………………….. $0.78
Egypt, Cairo………………………………………… $0.65
Nigeria, Lagos……………………………………… $0.38
Venezuela, Caracas……………………………… $0.12

Pretty wide range, eh?

Read more about it here, along with a good comentary on why boycotting a particular brand of gas just doesn’t work.
