a How-To: Get the copper from a copper penny
Posted on July 17th, 2007 in Hands On/Build This!, How To's, Labs/Experiments, Time Wasters | No Comments »
Yes, so I’m on lunch break >.<
Who knows what a US copper penny is made of? Well….it used to be copper. Now, its a copper shell with a zinc interior. You can get the copper shell very easily, provided you want to play with some acid. Get a penny and make sure its dated post-1982.
File around the edge to the point where you can see a bit of white (zinc)
Get muriatic acide from your nice, friendly, local hardware store. Its also known as HCL, its used for cleaning concrete.
Drop the penny in a glass bowl of the acide, make sure it doesnt splash, and wear gloves….please. After the bubbles stop forming, pour the acide into a sink, and make sure it doesnt splatter. NEVER add water TO a chemical directly, it can boil. always add chemical TO water.
Rinse the penny shells afterwards, and voila!

Escape reality with the Avatar Suit!!! (Video)

Why live in first-person real-life when you can wear the Avatar Suit, and experience life from a second-person point of view?
“Do you play so many videogames that you feel weird walking around
without being able to see yourself from a third-person perspective? If
so, you need to uninstall World of Warcraft and reacquaint yourself
with the sun and your peers. If that seems like too difficult a
prospect to handle, you can always just get an Avatar Machine. This
contraption for the antisocial and maladjusted allows you to stroll
around the real world seeing yourself from a perspective you’re more
used to, all while freaking out everyone around you.”

Google Elmur Fudd?

I did a little searching, and found a few “alternate” google homepages. . . .
http://www.google.com/intl/xx-elmer/
http://www.google.com/intl/xx-hacker/
http://www.google.com/intl/xx-piglatin/
http://www.google.com/intl/xx-klingon/
Theres a few more, and the google searches don’t actually change the results, they’re just alternate homepages.
.
Although those alternate Google homepages don’t do anything but look cool, Google does offer a few specialized searches. Search for results pertaining to the US Government, Linux, Apple/Macintosh, or Microsoft.

Sweedish woman has fastest residential internet connection
“75-year-old Sibritt Löthberg from Karlstad Sweden just got her first computer, but it didn’t take her long to download all the necessary patches.
Swedish news site The Local reports that Löthberg’s home has been tricked-out with a record-breaking 40 Gb/s connection – the first time a private residence has tapped into the internet at such high speeds.
The blazing-fast connection comes courtesy her son, Peter Löthberg, a Swedish optical internet guru working at Cisco.
Ma Löthberg’s house was converted into a broadband dog-and-pony act in an effort to promote high-speed fibre connections as a commercially viable platform.
“I want to show that there are other methods than the old fashioned ways such as copper wires and radio, which lack the possibilities that fibre has,” said Peter Löthberg.
According to The Local, the secret sauce behind the connection is a new modulation technique that allows data to be transfered directly between two routers up to 2,000 km apart – with no intermediary transponders. This allows information to travel over huge distances without data loss.”

Guy writes 384 page sci-fi novel on his cell phone
“Talk about some serious work, and forget shooting video and photos from
your phone. This Italian guy wrote a 384-page science fiction novel on
his mobile phone while commuting back and forth to work over 17 weeks.
Robert Bernocco wrote it in short paragraphs on his Nokia 6630, using
T9 of course, and saved them on the phone. Then he downloaded the text
to his computer to proofread and edit. It’s just proof of what you can
do when you use your time wisely. His book is called Compagni di Viaggo (or Fellow Travelers *how appropriate* in English), and is now self-published on Lulu.com.”

So, most people like a game of frisbee.
well, here’s a video where someone uses a frisbee as a boomerang. they call it a trick….i call it, utilizing one’s surrounding environment for one’s goal. (i’m still suffering from jet lag, waiting for a stupid separation column to stop dripping at work, and this is the best i can come up with. k?)
right, so i’m back from my trip
and, here is the link: Frisbees!

iPhone sells for more then 2x the production cost
Posted on July 4th, 2007 in Computer software/hardware, Lacking a Category, Time Wasters | No Comments »
“Apple Inc. sells the new iPhone at more than double production costs, suggesting the new handset may be more profitable than rivals from Motorola Inc. and Nokia Oyj. The shares rose the most in six months to a record.
The most-expensive $599 model has component and manufacturing costs of $265.83, which translates into margins of more than 55 percent, according to iSuppli Corp. The research firm tore open an iPhone to identify the components in the device.”
